What the Grades Do to Your Rig

US-178 north of Pickens drops steeply toward Rocky Bottom, and SC-11, the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway, climbs and winds past Table Rock and Caesars Head. Those roads put a load on parts that flat interstate driving doesn't.

  • Trailer brakes. Long descents heat and wear electric brakes. If the brakes pull, grab, or feel weak after a mountain trip, have them adjusted and inspected.
  • Wheel bearings and hubs. Heat from braking and heavy loads is hard on bearings. Repacking is cheap compared to a roadside failure.
  • Shaded sites and solar. Table Rock's sites are under heavy tree cover, so roof panels produce far less there. See solar installs for options that work in shade.
  • Colder nights. Higher elevation freezes sooner. Winterize earlier if the rig is stored up the mountain.
